Tidewater Notes

Low tide walks, rock pools and what the sea leaves behind.

October 28 · spring tide

Beadlet anemones on the north ledge

The lowest tide of the month uncovered the far ledge for almost an hour. Counted forty-one beadlet anemones in one gully, most of them closed into dark red jelly drops. Two strawberry anemones further down, which is a first for this spot.

October 14 · neap tide

A quiet morning and one shore crab

Neap tides do not give much, but the upper pools are easier to watch without wading. A single green shore crab defended a limpet shell for ten minutes against a blenny twice its length. The blenny gave up first.

Kelp after the storm

The strandline was thick with oarweed and sugar kelp torn off by the weekend swell. Holdfasts are worth turning over: brittle stars, tiny chitons and a sea slug I still have not identified.
